Bing is an internet web search engine developed, owned and operated by Microsoft. Bing was launched in 2009 as a rebranded version of Microsoft’s earlier search engines, MSN Search, Windows Live Search and Live Search. As of March 2018, Bing audiences in the U.S. comprised mostly of those in the age group of between 45-54 years range and of those who live in households that earn an annual income above a hundred thousand U.S. dollars.

As of August 2017, Bing had the second-largest global single-word search query market share, accounting for 25.47 percent of single-word search queries. Bing also has the third highest market share among the leading mobile search providers in the United States only behind Google and Yahoo!. Earlier in 2009, Microsoft had arrived at a deal with Yahoo! in which Bing was to replace and power Yahoo! Search engines that only retained the Yahoo! user-interface. The deal was slightly altered in 2015 requiring Yahoo! only to use Bing for a majority of searches.

Bing currently generates a monthly search volume of around 12 billion search requests worldwide and as of August 2017, Bing obtained its largest share of worldwide search traffic volume from the United States. Bing currently provides a variety of search services that include web, video, image and map search products. Bing web search features include interface features such as daily changing background image and media features such as video search with adjustable settings for length, screen size, resolution and source.

Bing has a browser extension toolbar and services that allows for users to initiate a web search from a Bing desktop. As of July 2019, Bing had the second largest desktop market share among the leading search engines. Bing services also includes “instant answers” services such as for live scores from sporting events, stock market information for finance, a dictionary, translation services, a calculator, health information services, as well as services for tracking packages and flight tracking.

Bing also offers webmaster, mobile, and developer services. As of the second quarter of 2019, Bing had a 23 percent mobile share of organic search engine visits in the United States. Mobile users are able to conduct search queries through Bing using a downloadable mobile application or through their browsers. As of the second quarter of 2019, the majority of paid mobile search clicks to Microsoft Advertising / Bing came from phone users, rather than from tablets.
