Mobile eSports - statistics & facts

Traditional eSports, also called electronic sports, refers to video game competitions that are typically played on PC or video game consoles, which are often streamed live over the internet. Mobile eSports, on the other hand, refers to those games that can be played on a mobile device such as a smartphone. In general, the market value of mobile gaming content has been on the rise worldwide, a trend which is expected to continue. Some eSports games have both traditional and mobile versions, while others exist only on the mobile platform. The highest grossing mobile game worldwide as of 2021 was PUBG Mobile, the mobile version of the well-known battle royale game PUBG. Other popular mobile games included Honor of Kings and Pokémon GO. Among other mobile battle royale games, PUBG Mobile was also the top grossing mobile battle royale shooter worldwide in the same time period, followed by Garena Free Fire.

Global mobile eSports tournaments

Both traditional eSports and mobile eSports host global tournaments for individual players and teams alike. These tournaments can draw in huge audiences either in person or over a streaming service, and winners can earn significant amounts of prize money. Of the most watched eSports tournaments worldwide in 2021, the Free Fire World Series in Singapore, a battle royale mobile eSports tournament, drew in over five million peak viewers, while the PUBG Mobile Global Championship reported nearly four million peak viewers.

The prize pool for mobile eSports tournaments can be quite large. The overall prize money pool for the Call of Duty: World Championship was under a million U.S. dollars in 2020, but this grew to two million dollars by the following year. Other mobile eSports tournaments showed similar growth in prize money. The PUBG Mobile Pro League eSports tournament reported a prize pool of five million dollars in 2020, but this nearly tripled by the following year.

Consumers of mobile eSports worldwide

The mobile eSports market has boomed in recent years as the industry gained popularity along with traditional eSports. Mobile eSports viewers worldwide amounted to over 400 million in 2019, a number which was expected to grow over the next five years. Within this growth in overall viewership, a large portion of the increase in worldwide mobile eSports viewers regionally was expected to come from China and Europe.

Consumers of eSports worldwide have a large variety of game genres to choose from, whether they are professional players or casual viewers. In recent years, role playing games (RPGs) such as Minecraft was the top grossing mobile game genre worldwide, and gross revenues for this genre grew nearly 20 percent between 2019 and 2020. Other top mobile game genres included strategy and puzzle games, such as Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga.
