Video games industry in Russia - statistics & facts

The Russian gaming market, the eighth-largest worldwide, was forecast at 3.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2025. PC games led the market with nearly 82 billion Russian rubles in revenue in 2020. At the same time, mobile games' earnings grew at a nearly 40 percent rate in 2020, faster than any other device segment. The domestic game development industry was mostly represented in the mobile segment, with major publishers including My.Games, Pixonic, MyTona, and Kefir!. My.Games, the gaming segment of the internet corporation Mail.Ru Group, was the leading company in the market. Sberbank, the Russian bank with a digital ecosystem, has entered the market in 2021 under the brand SberGames. Russia was the first country worldwide to recognize video game competitions as a professional sports discipline.

Which video games are popular in Russia?

Shooter games occupied almost 60 percent of free-to-play games' revenue in the country. Examples include World of Tanks developed by the Belarusian company Wargaming or Warface published by My.Games. The battle royale game PUBG Mobile, published by China's Tencent Games, and Brawl Stars, a multiplayer online battle arena by Supercell from Finland, were among the highest-earning mobile games. Other popular mobile games were Gardenscapes and Homescapes developed by Playrix, a company headquartered in Ireland, which was founded by Russian brothers Igor and Dmitry Bukhman. In the console segment, Russians preferred to play racing games.

Russian game purchasing behavior

Most Russians purchased video games once every six months or more rarely. When asked how much they spent on PC games on average per month, 15 percent of respondents named a range between 400 and 999 Russian rubles, and the same share reported spending 2,000 to 4,999 Russian rubles. In total, Russian players spent around 236 million U.S. dollars on gaming apps in the first quarter of 2021, where Android users accounted nearly two thirds of the total. Furthermore, consumers acquired additional game items, such as in-game currency and boosters. In 2021, 15 percent of Russians made in-game purchases, while 14 percent downloaded paid games.
