The social media industry has seen a new and quickly expanding phenomenon in the past year. Silicon Valley’s newest addition Clubhouse is an invite-only audio-based social application and had roughly ten million weekly active users, as of February 2021. The platform is owned by entrepreneur Paul Davison and by Rohan Seth, who both founded it in April 2020.

What is the Clubhouse app used for?

Simply put, Clubhouse is a social network driven by voice. A key difference between Clubhouse and podcasts is that the platform has an interactive character where listeners are able to create and join different “rooms” and listen to or participate in other users’ live conversations. Several factors are behind the escalating popularity of Clubhouse. The appearance of influencers and celebrities, as well as some of the richest and most notable figures in the world, such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, has undoubtedly fueled its growth. Clubhouse’s exclusivity is another feature that increases the app’s appeal for users and it was downloaded over nine million times as of February 2021. Until that month, North and Latin America accounted for the largest share of global downloads. However, as of February, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa took over and most Clubhouse downloads came from that region.

Social audio

While audio media has been around for a very long time, user-generated content is the new audio generation and seems to have influenced the social media world, with many startups creating user-generated audio platforms. Clubhouse topped the ranking of UGC audio apps by downloads, followed by Korean Spoon and American Locker Room. Social audio apps offer various services, such as audio-chat features, live audio, pre-recorded clips, allowing users to discuss ideas, share stories, poetry, and music, or just spend time together in virtual spaces.
