Print media in Poland - statistics & facts

In Poland, the print media industry – including newspapers, magazines, and books – has been on a decline. This can be observed especially well in contrast with rapidly growing media industries like video games or the internet. Revenues of the journal/periodical industry have been decreasing since 2014, and magazines and newspapers together represent less than four percent of all media in the advertising market. Moreover, the sales of physical newspapers and magazines in every genre have been dropping.

However, household spending on print media is increasing, which could be a sign of printed products becoming more of a luxury than a necessity. The country’s top newspapers remain some of the most influential media. Some of Poland’s leading papers have effectively used the internet to their advantage, as can be seen with the large-scale digitization of daily newspapers like Super Express, Gazeta Wyborcza, or Rzeczpospolita.

The book industry is experiencing similar changes; industry revenues and traditional readership are decreasing every year. However, as with newspapers and magazines, there is a lot of hope in digitization. The market for ePublishing – mainly eBooks and audiobooks – is expected to keep growing.

Digitization continues to transform all traditional media, but print media has an important role in Polish culture and everyday life. For the near future, it will remain a market worth examining.
