In Mexico, production of the beloved commodity takes place mainly in the southeastern state of Tabasco. The humid, tropical environment is ideal for cocoa tree plantations. In 2020, the area planted with these types of trees expanded through more than 59.5 thousand hectares along the coastal states of Tabasco, Chiapas, and Guerrero, resulting in an output of over 29 thousand metric tons. In addition to regular cocoa, as global sustainability and health concerns raise within the population, the production of organic crops has been developing in the country over the past years. Organic standards try to ensure practices that are beneficial for the producers, the consumers, and the environment.

Chocolate as a favorite

After its cultivation and processing, cocoa allows for the production of well-known commodities such as cocoa butter and the widely consumed chocolate. In Mexico, chocolate is one of the products that generate the highest revenue within the confectionery industry, with a value of more than six billion U.S. dollars in 2020. With the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was estimated that consumption of chocolate confectionery in Mexico went from 5.7 kilograms per person in 2019 to 6.8 kilograms per person in 2020.
