Production of dairy products

The number of dairy farms has been steadily declining. In 2020, roughly 5.7 thousand dairy farms were producing milk in Finland, nearly half as many as in 2010. This may be partially due to the decreasing price per liter paid to dairy farmers. Valio Ltd is a Finnish manufacturer of dairy products and one of the largest companies in the country. Valio has around 4.7 thousand dairy farmers that own the company through 14 cooperatives. The products of the company include cheese, powdered ingredients, butter, yogurt, plant-based products, and milk. Since 2016 the net sales of Valio have been increasing, amounting to just over 1.8 billion euros in 2020.

Consumption and prices of dairy products

While per capita consumption of milk drastically declined by over 30 kilograms from 2010 to 2020, per capita consumption of cheese increased in the same period by over six kilograms. The consumer price indexes of milk and milk products have developed in different directions over the past few years. While the consumer price index of milk declined after 2014 and remained at approximately 119 points, the consumer price index of milk products fluctuated between 100 and 111 points.
