Yogurt in the UK - statistics & facts

Today, yogurt can be found in supermarkets around the world, in different sweet or savory variations. It is also a common food found in the diet of both Europeans and those from the United Kingdom (UK), as almost 40 percent of the worldwide yogurt market is held by Europe. In recent years, yogurt has become more appealing amongst consumers due to its status as a health food. Due to this, the global market value of yogurt was forecast to reach about 51 billion U.S. dollars by 2024, which is more than a 25 percent increase from the 2020 value.

Yogurt production in the UK

Although the UK historically did not have strong ties to yogurt, production is becoming increasingly present due to the demand. In 2020, production of yogurt in the UK totaled approximately 531 thousand tons, increasing from 374 thousand tons in 2017. The sales value of yogurt and yogurt adjacent products such as buttermilk has increased correspondingly. With this being said, however, consumers in the UK have become health conscious, as they now reach for more natural yogurt products. This change of dietary patterns is evidenced by the sales volume of flavored yogurt products in the UK, which decreased significantly between 2008 and 2020.

Consumption

While UK constituted only around six percent of total European production of yogurt in 2020, consumption of yogurt in the UK is at an all time high. As of 2019, the average consumption of yogurt in the UK was 188 milliliters per person per week. It was reported that the majority of consumers in the UK used yogurt between once a day to a few times a week. Although yogurt can be used as an ingredient in baking, it is most often consumed in the UK as a snack, quick drink, or as part of a dessert. The number of people in the UK who consume yogurt infrequently is low.

Leading brands

The leading producer of yogurt products in the UK is Müller Corner. In 2020, around six million consumers in the UK used Mueller Corner yogurt products. This was followed closely by Yeo Valley and Müller Light. Plant-based yogurt products such as Alpro Soya have also been gaining popularity in the UK. Tesco was the leading supermarket brand for yogurt drink products, with nearly two million UK consumers using it each year.
