CVS Health - Statistics & Facts

Founded in 2007 through a merger between CVS Pharmacy and Caremark Rx, CVS Health is the largest company that has operations solely in the United States, operating close to 10,000 stores throughout the country. In 2020, U.S. pharmacies and drug stores generated over 300 billion U.S. dollars in sales. In 2020, CVS Health generated about 90 billion retail sales, second only to Walgreens in the drug store segment.

In 2020, over 6.3 billion medical prescriptions were dispensed throughout the United States. By 2021, about 4.78 billion prescriptions should be filled annually by retail pharmacies and drug stores in the United States, with CVS Health outlets responsible for about 39 percent of those filled prescriptions.

Competitors

In the drug store and pharmacy retail segment, Walgreens-Boots Alliance is the leading name in the United States. The company, which is active not only in the U.S. but also in other key international markets such as the United Kingdom, generated a gross profit of 28 billion U.S. dollars in the most recently reported year. Pharmacy sales made up of three quarters of Walgreens' sales in that same year, with retail products covering about 24 percent of sales. By 2026, it is forecast that Walgreens-Boots Alliance will increase its sales in North America to 130 billion U.S. dollars, with CVS Health closely following behind and estimated to reach 120 billion U.S. dollars worth of sales.

Pandemic impact on drug store visits

Drugstores and pharmacies are still popular retail locations for U.S. consumers. In 2021, around four in 10 consumers in the younger age brackets preferred drug stores and pharmacies like CVS for their retail purchases. However, with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic significantly impacting shopping behavior, many U.S. consumers were reluctant to wait a long time to enter or receive service at a drug store or pharmacy. Most U.S. individuals were willing to wait up to a maximum of 15 minutes, according to the results of a recent survey. One of the alternatives to waiting in long pharmacy queues was the possibility of appointment scheduling. Around 60 percent of shoppers in the United States said they would feel safer if retailers offered appointment scheduling services to book shopper visits. Another alternative to physically visiting a retailer was visits to the online stores of pharmacies and drug stores. This was particularly popular during the first months of the pandemic, leading to increased online traffic to health and medicine websites.
