Tourism in Venice - Statistics & Facts

A listed UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Venice fascinates people all over the world with its arts and architecture, renowned Lagoon, and the evocative maze of bridges and canals. Spreading over a group of 118 small islands, the capital of the North-Eastern region of Veneto is one of the most popular Italian tourist cities. The number of overnight stays in the Serenissima – as Venice is nicknamed – roughly doubled from 2003 to 2019, making it the second leading Italian municipality by number of overnight stays.

Tourism in Venice and the COVID-19 impact

When looking at the number of overnight stays, it becomes clear the paramount role played by international tourism in Venice. In 2019, the city registered a total of roughly 13 million overnight stays, of which 11 million were made by visitors from abroad. In this respect, the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was dramatic in Venice in 2020, with the health crisis hitting international travel particularly hard.

The number of inbound overnight stays in Venice dropped to approximately 2.4 million in 2020. In that year, German travelers spent the highest number of stays in the city, while the U.S. was by far the leading international tourist market in Venice prior to the pandemic. In this respect, it is likely that trips were dictated by proximity in 2020, due to travel bans and strict safety regulations adopted during the health crisis. When looking at Italian domestic tourism in 2020, visitors from the neighboring region of Lombardy recorded the highest number of Italian overnight stays in Venice.

Tourist accommodations in Venice

It is reasonable to think that Venice’s international popularity would equate to higher prices in the city. In 2020, Venice ranked second in a list of Italian cities with the highest average price for four-star hotels, with Turin placing top of the ranking. While the number of tourists increased steadily before the pandemic, the number of hotels in the municipality of Venice experienced a decreasing trend between 2012 and 2019. Conversely, the number of non-hotel facilities in the city rose significantly over the same period.
