Camping & RV industry - Statistics & Facts

Camping is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the United States, whether it is in a tent at a campground, a recreational vehicle or even just the backyard. In 2017, 41.8 million people participated in car, backyard or RV camping in the United States. The same year, consumers spent almost 3 billion U.S. dollars on camping equipment – a large proportion of this expenditure was on backpacks and sleeping bags.

While participation in camping is not as common as other outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, biking and jogging, over 50% of North Americans stated that they took part in camping at least occasionally. In general, camping participants from North America come from a variety of backgrounds and most of them camp to relax, escape daily life and and because it is an affordable vacation option.

Recreational vehicles colloquially known as RVs, are a popular and convenient way of camping, as they provide campers with home comforts such as kitchen facilities and living areas. Demand for various types of RVs has increased year-over-year since 2009 when figures fell to just 165.7 thousand shipments. Wholesale shipments of recreational vehicles were forecasted to reached 504.6 thousand in 2017.
