The number of athletes playing tennis in Italy increased from 2008 to 2019. So did the federation revenues, which reached 63.8 million euros in 2019. As calculated by the FIT, most revenues were generated by international events. In this sense, the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tennis tournament surely played an essential role.
This competition, organized by the FIT and held annually in Rome, is the most important Italian tennis tournament, being part of the ATP World Tour Masters 100 (male tournament) and the WTA Premier 5 (female tournament). In 2019, ticket sales revenue for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia amounted to over 13 million euros and roughly 223 thousand people attended the event. The 2020 edition of the tournament, originally scheduled for May 4 to 17, has been postponed due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Matteo Berrettini was the Italian male tennis player scoring the highest number of ATP points as of August 2020. He ranked eighth in the ATP world ranking as of the survey period. Looking at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking, Camila Giorgi was the Italian female tennis player registering the highest WTA score. She ranked 71st in the world ranking as of August 2020.
