Health & Fitness Clubs - Statistics & Facts

Health and fitness clubs provide their customers with the infrastructure for their workouts and physical activity in exchange for a membership fee. The market size of the global fitness and health club industry has been steadily increasing in recent years, exceeding 96 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. Some of the largest health clubs worldwide in terms of revenue include 24 Hour Fitness and Life Time Fitness. At the very top of this list sits LA Fitness, which generated revenue exceeding two billion U.S. dollars in 2018. Many of these health clubs are exclusive to the United States and, in fact, the aforementioned three companies also top the list of the largest health clubs by revenue within the United States.

The fitness industry certainly appears to be on the up, with the number of fitness enterprises in the United States rising significantly in the last decade. However, these projections are likely to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic which swept across the globe in 2020. Many health and fitness clubs were closed for months on end in an attempt to stem the flow of the disease and gyms were left empty as people were encouraged and, in some cases, legally required to stay at home.

During a June 2020 survey in the United States gauging public opinion on going to the gym during the pandemic, some 46 percent of respondents stated that they would be very uncomfortable going back to the gym or an exercise class while the crisis was ongoing. Indeed, when asked when they would feel comfortable going back to the gym amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more than one-fifth of respondents stated that it would take more than six months for them to return to a fitness club. With the sales of home gyms in the United States on the rise and fitness and gym influencers on Instagram gaining millions of followers worldwide, it seems that more people are trying to getting fit in the comfort of their own home.
