Fitbit’s first device, the Fitbit Classic, was released to the consumer market in 2009 and had limited features compared to the most recent models. To stay competitive in the fast-growing wearable technology industry, the company released multiple models and features throughout the years. Fitbit is currently offering nine different models in its lineup for 2021. Fitbit devices on the market vary in price range from around 80 U.S. dollars to 250 U.S. dollars.

Google acquires Fitbit

Since 2010, Fitbit has sold over 116 million devices worldwide and has 31 million active users but has struggled with declining sales in recent years. Fitbit shipped 12.9 million units worldwide in 2020, while Apple shipped over 151 million wearable devices worldwide in the same period. In early 2021, Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, completed the acquisition of Fitbit in a deal that valued the company at 2.1 billion U.S. dollars. This purchase makes Fitbit the fourth largest acquisitions by Alphabet as of July 2021. This acquisition might bring Fitbit back into the race for the top spot in the wearables market with the help of Google.
