iPad - statistics & facts

The iPad, a pioneering device in the tablet market, was introduced to the consumer market in 2010. The device aimed to fill a gap between smartphones and laptop computers, offering another mobile device option for consumers. The iPad is closely related to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, as it uses the same operating system and multi-touch user interface. Since its introduction in 2010, Apple has released several versions of the iPad, with the regular iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro running the latest iOS 15. Being the leader within the tablet market, Apple generated over four billion U.S. dollars in revenues. Sales of iPads in the latest quarter of 2021 accounted for about 9.9 percent of Apple’s total global revenue.

Competition

After introducing the iPad, competitors rushed into the market with their tablets. Apple saw its global market share decrease from about 60 percent at the beginning of 2011 to just over 34 percent a decade later. Still, Apple continues to be the leading tablet vendor globally, with Samsung as its closest competitor. Even though Apple is still the top tablet vendor, the company no longer has the most popular operating system for tablets. Apple’s iOS market share has fallen sharply since the iPad’s initial release, while Android has slowly gained a strong market presence. With more companies entering the market and often providing products at a lower price, Apple’s overall market share is not expected to grow in the coming years. Nevertheless, it has retained its position as one of the market’s luxury options.

App store

The Apple App Store has been providing more and more apps over the years, and as of August 2021, there were over three million apps and over a million games in the Apple App Store. As of July 2021, Hooper Hooper was the most popular iPad app in the Apple App Store, being downloaded nearly 2.4 million times in that month alone. Google has always been leading with the number of available apps and app downloads for several years, but Apple records higher mobile user spending and gross app revenue figures. We might see some significant changes in these figures based on the case of Apple vs. Epic, which started in August 2020.
