Dell EMC, previously EMC Corporation, is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and Round Rock, Texas, United States. Dell EMC operates in the storage, server, converged systems, and cloud solutions markets. EMC Corporation was acquired by Dell on September 7, 2016, following a cash-and-stock deal valued at 67 billion U.S. dollars. As a result of this merger, Dell Technologies was formed, and is made up in total by Dell, Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, Virtustream, and VMware.

Dell Technologies

Dell Technologies offers hardware, software, and service solutions, and operates across three business units: Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), Client Solutions Group (CSG), and VMware. Across these channels, Dell Technologies generated revenues of over 92 billion U.S. dollars in its 2020 fiscal year, with a net income of 4.62 billion U.S. dollars. Currently, Dell Technologies operates in 180 countries and employs more than 150,000 people worldwide.

Dell’s Infrastructure Solutions Group

The Dell Technologies business is made up by the Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), the Client Solutions Group (CSG), and VMware. The CSG includes branded hardware such as desktops and notebooks, as well as peripherals including monitors and projectors. The ISG, or Dell EMC, incorporates the company’s various activities in the storage, server, converged systems, and cloud solutions markets. Dell has utilized the expertise EMC has across these fields, as well as using the EMC name with some of its products. In the company’s 2020 fiscal year, the ISG business unit alone generated revenues of nearly 34 billion U.S. dollars.

VMware

Dell Technologies is now focusing on managing business clients’ data needs, reflecting the changing market environment from traditional, hardware-based enterprise storage to hybrid cloud services. For Dell Technologies to better compete in the area of cloud computing and to be able to handle multi-cloud operations, the company obtained VMware during the EMC acquisition. VMware is a cloud computing and software virtualization company, working in the areas of hybrid and multi-cloud, networking, and security. VMware alone generated revenues of close to 11 billion U.S. dollars in Dell’s 2020 fiscal year.
