With regards to chip design and architecture, the Netherlands is home to several innovative businesses, including the multinational semiconductor manufacturer NXP Semiconductors. Headquartered in Eindhoven, the company generated 8.61 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2020. In terms of segments, the company generated more than 3.8 billion U.S. dollars in the automotive market, with a further 1.8 billion U.S. dollars from industrial and internet of things (IoT) applications. The company is also strong within the communication infrastructure and mobile markets, being the co-inventor of near field communication (NFC) technology along with Sony. NFC chipsets enable mobile phones to be used to pay for goods and store and exchange data securely, with NFC technology also used in a wide array of wearables and other accessories.

Chip production and equipment

The Netherlands is also home to several companies that provide equipment to the semiconductor manufacturing industry, including ASML. Headquartered in Veldhoven, the company generated revenues of 14 billion euros in 2020 and is the largest supplier of photolithography systems for the semiconductor industry worldwide. The company is a leading provider of machines involved in the production of 5nm chip technology. ASML was the first company to develop the process for making 5nm chips, being used commercially by the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) - the sole supplier of A15 chips used in Apple’s latest iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. In addition to ASML, other notable Dutch firms include ASM International and BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI). In 2020, Almere-headquartered ASM International generated revenues of 1.3 billion euros, while Duiven-headquartered BESI saw revenues amount to 433.6 million euros.
