Internet connections and 5G services

Mobile internet connections have increased rapidly, and they now represent the vast majority of internet connections. By the end of 2020, over 60 percent of active mobile internet connections in Romania were 4G and 5G. Nonetheless, the focus for the following years is still on expanding the 5G technology. According to the Romanian Government’s 5G strategy, the launch of the new mobile standard should have begun in 2020. While other countries such as France and Germany have already granted 5G licenses, Romania had to postpone the 5G auction in 2020. Although the project is still under development, Vodafone, Digi and Orange have already launched 5G connections in some of the biggest cities in Romania, including Bucharest, Cluj, Brasov, and Constanta. However, despite having 5G subscriptions and 5G devices, the country’s 5G network is currently a hybrid one. This means that the network achieves very high data transfer speeds, but continues to operate on 4G frequencies.

Telecommunication providers in Romania

In 2020, the annual revenues of telecommunication service providers in Romania accounted for 1.58 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. The most important telecommunications provider in 2020 was Orange Romania, with a revenue worth 5.6 billion Romanian lei, followed by Vodafone Romania, RCS&RDS and Telekom. The acquisition of UPC Romania by the Vodafone Group in July 2019 allowed Vodafone to be one of the most dominant telecommunication providers in the country. However, one of the most important transactions in the telecommunication industry was announced in November 2020, when Orange Romania confirmed that they would take over 54 percent of the shares of Telekom Romania Communications. The transaction was completed in September 2021. When it comes to fixed telephony service providers based on the number of subscribers, Telekom Romania and RDS&RCS were the leading providers as of December 2020, accounting for a market share of 38 and 39 percent. On the other hand, even before purchasing over half of Telekom’s shares, Orange was the main mobile service provider based on the number of active SIM cards, while the cable internet market has been dominated by RCS&RDS for the past three years.
