Telecommunications industry in Thailand - statistics & facts

In the early days of the telecommunications sector in Thailand, the majority of companies in the industry were state-owned enterprises. Although they are now corporatized and rebranded, businesses within the telecommunications sector are required to be under the supervision of the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), which is an independent state organization. As of today, the telecommunications sector in Thailand has a customer base of over 60 million, making it the second-largest telecommunications sector in Southeast Asia. In terms of market performance, the market value of the telecommunications sector in Thailand has fluctuated throughout the years. However, the sector's market value has steadily maintained itself during the recent COVID-19 pandemic due to increased demand for connectivity from social distancing policies.

The state of Thai telecommunication industry

The telecommunications industry can be divided into several categories such as fixed-line and fixed-broadband communication, mobile communication, and internet-based communication. In Thailand, wireless communication dominates the market and has shown substantial market growth for wireless communication devices in recent years. As a result, fixed-line subscriptions in Thailand have declined, reflecting in a decreasing revenue of fixed-line telephone numbers in recent quarters.

Mobile communication and network in Thailand

A major contributor to the dominance of wireless connectivity in Thailand is the growth of the mobile communication market. The number of mobile subscribers has been steadily developing throughout the past years, with some slight fluctuations. Additionally, the introduction of 5G in 2020 shows the promise of further expanding the mobile market while also being designated as one of the major drives by the government to revitalize the economy after the effects of the recent pandemic.

Key players in the Thai telecommunication market

In 2020, Advanced Info Services Public Co., Ltd. (AIS) ranked twelfth in the Asia Pacific in terms of brand value. Most of Thai mobile users also chose AIS for its mobile services, among other major mobile operators namely True Move H and Dtac. Nevertheless, all three leading mobile operators offer a high-quality mobile user experience in different aspects. For example, True Move H provided the best streaming performance of its network in 2021.
