Mobile communications
In recent years, the telecommunications industry in the Asia-Pacific region has grown significantly, with an especially increased growth in the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) market. MVNOs resell wireless communications services at lower prices. However, there has been an increased demand for better voice quality and connectivity. This, in turn, has stimulated the growth of the telecommunications market in the Asia-Pacific region, and with this has generated increased expenditure on telecommunications services. The telephone companies and internet service providers within the telecommunications industry provide a gateway for the progression of mobile communications. Mobile communications appear to be the current focus and future of the telecommunications industry in the Asia-Pacific region. This can be deduced by the great number of mobile subscriptions within Asia-Pacific countries. Interestingly, it is estimated that over 50 percent of mobile subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region are already using a 4G mobile network system.
Industry landscape
Previously, the telecommunications industry has been led by the United States, with telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon dominating the market with the most revenue. However, in recent times, Asian companies have, too, emerged as major players within the industry. China and Japan have set precedents, firmly establishing the Asia-Pacific countries on the map. Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, India, and Vietnam all boast major telecom operators in the Asia-Pacific region, strengthening the status of the Asia-Pacific region within the telecommunications industry. The revenue of voice services in Asia has been declining in recent years, especially mobile voice, whereas the data services for both mobile and fixed-line were forecast to keep increasing. Telecom providers are starting to invest more in 5G, which was forecast to account for more than half of mobile connections in developed Asia-Pacific countries by 2025.
