The most common mode of transportation for travelers in Croatia was by passenger car. In 2016, the automobile accounted for 83.3 percent of all passenger-kilometers covered in the country. That year, the volume of road transport reached 3.8 billion passenger-kilometers, with a further increase reported the following year.
Despite the growth of freight and passenger transportation, investments made by the Croatian government toward infrastructure maintenance and construction has been more or less steadily decreasing. Investment value reached a low of 0.5 percent in 2016. The amount of money put into rail infrastructure was 44.3 million euros that same year.
The popularity of the passenger car was reflected in the growth of licensed vehicles in the country. By the end of 2016, there were 1.55 million cars and light vans registered by Croatian residents. This translated into 374 units per one thousand inhabitants. Although the amount of vehicles on the roads increased, the number of fatalities reported on roads had fortunately been in decline since 2008.
