Roads were also the most common mode of transport for passengers traveling on land through the country, with cars being used the most often. All roads in Romania had a combined length of 86,234 kilometers. High road usage raised the requirements of the government to increase spending on infrastructure. The largest sum was invested in 2011 at nearly 3.3 billion euros, before decreasing the following years to 2.4 billion euros in 2016. In 2018, overall investments in inland transport infrastructure made up 1.25 percent of Romania’s GDP.
Regarding household expenditure on transportation, in 2017 final consumption amounted to 12.9 billion euros, of which roughly 2.2 billion was spent on the purchase of personal transport equipment e.g. cars. In 2019, Romanians bought more than 161,500 new passenger cars, while the overall number of such vehicles registered in the country approximated six million.
