Retail in Hong Kong - statistics & facts

Retail trade is one of the most significant contributors to Hong Kong’s economy. In 2020, the retail industry employed more than 250 thousand people, the highest among all service industries. Despite being one of the leading retail markets in Asia, Hong Kong suffered from a plunge in retail sales in 2020, resulting from diminishing tourists caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, 2020 also witnessed an unprecedented increase in e-retail businesses. In the past 20 months since January 2020, online retail’s share more than doubled in Hong Kong, and the number of e-commerce users soared to 5.5 million. COVID-19 has reshaped Hong Kong’s retail landscape in many ways, and the changes are likely to continue for long after the pandemic.

Digital transformation in Hong Kong’s retail sector

Brick-and-mortar stores remain the most popular shopping places for most Hong Kong consumers. In 2020, the offline retail sales value in Hong Kong exceeded 300 billion Hong Kong dollars, outvaluing online retail by an overwhelming margin. However, triggered by the global coronavirus crisis and social-distancing restrictions, online shopping became an inevitable future trend in Hong Kong. According to a research conducted in July 2021, more than 80 percent of Hong Kong shoppers have used online platforms for purchasing non-grocery goods amid the pandemic. Also, four-out-of-five consumers said they would continue to use e-commerce after all restrictions were lifted.

Retail tourism in Hong Kong

Visitors from outside Hong Kong have played a significant role in the city’s retail sector. Around 60 million people visited Hong Kong each year before the pandemic, and the share of tourists’ consumption in total retail sales has hovered at 30 to 40 percent. The majority of tourists who visited Hong Kong were from mainland China, who spent nearly 6,000 Hong Kong dollars per person each trip. Offering a diverse range of brands and commodities, Hong Kong is known as a shopping paradise for millions of visitors from mainland China every year. The most popular products among Chinese travelers were beauty products, apparel, and luxury goods.
