Popular alcoholic beverages

The most popular alcoholic drink in the country is beer. The per capita beer consumption has been increasing since 2017. An average Russian aged 15 years and older drank around three liters of beer in a year. This figure was significantly lower than in 2008, when it peaked at nearly 4.7 liters. Accordingly, and production volumes ranked the highest compared to other alcoholic beverages on the Russian market. In terms of retail trade, vodka and beer accounted for the largest share of the sales revenue. Vodka, however, was the second most costly alcoholic drink after cognac, while beer listed the cheapest in 2021.

International trade in alcohol

When looking at trade, wine was the most imported alcoholic beverage to Russia, with about 450 million liters in imports over 2019. Italy, Spain, and France remaining as the main import sources of afore-mentioned alcoholic beverage to the region. As for exports, vodka was the most exported alcoholic drink from the country after beer. With about 22 million U.S. dollars worth of vodka imports, the United Kingdom ranked as the major importer of Russian vodka in 2020. Major importers of beer from Russia, however, are Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.
