Fashion e-commerce in Mexico - statistics & facts

As in most parts of the world, e-commerce was the fashion industry's lifeline during the restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 crisis in Mexico. While online shopping for apparel, shoes, and accessories was already growing before 2020, the pandemic would give it an unprecedented boost, setting it up to be one of the fastest-growing e-commerce revenue segments over the next few years. In addition to providing a platform for Mexican fashion to gain exposure locally and abroad, e-commerce has made global trends more accessible to Mexicans. As a result, online fashion revenues were forecast to grow by more than 50 percent between 2022 and 2025, reaching approximately 10.5 billion U.S. dollars.

Male shoppers spend more, Gen Z goes mobile

To fully understand the growing relevance of fashion in Mexico's e-commerce, it is necessary to first grasp the demographics behind its success. In this regard, a 2021 study of the average amount spent per online fashion purchase in the Latin American country revealed that male-identified internet shoppers had a larger budget to spend on online fashion purchases than their female counterparts. On the other hand, when comparing the annual frequency of fashion shopping across age groups in Mexico, the results were somewhat uniform. Still, mobile fashion shopping remains young people's territory, with nearly eight out of ten mobile fashion shoppers aged 18 to 24 years old.

Brands up their game in Mexico

There is a myriad of brands, both local and international, selling fashion items online in Mexico. Some of the country's favorite online fashion retailers are department store Liverpool and online marketplaces Amazon and Mercado Libre. However, Chinese fast fashion brand SHEIN is looking at turning the situation around by investing heavily in advertising in the Mexican market. Considering the benefits of taking over the second largest e-commerce market in Latin America, this strategy holds considerable advantages. The bet seems to be already paying off since, in July 2021, SHEIN topped the lists of the most used websites for buying fashion items and most downloaded fashion apps in Mexico.
