U.S. organic consumers - statistics & facts

The organic movement is one of the biggest trends in the last few decades and is here to stay. Worldwide, sales of organic foods have increased more than 100 billion U.S. dollars since 2000 and North America accounted for the largest share of organic purchases. Organic regulations can vary between products, but in general, require no chemicals or other restricted substances to aid in the cultivation or production of the products. Although there is an ongoing debate about the benefits of consuming and using organic products versus conventionally produced products, organic food is a fixture in grocery stores across all fifty states and one can find numerous organic cosmetic and personal care brands in stores and online.

Organic food purchasing

Some of the most common claims associated with organic foods in the United States are that they are free of preservatives, hormones, additives, and genetically modified organisms. Just about half of U.S. consumers purchase organic dairy and around 40 percent purchase organic meat. Fresh produce is less commonly purchased than animal products. Only about one third of consumers reported using organic fruits and organic vegetables more often than conventional produce. The consumption value of organic packaged food in the United States is expected to grow from 21.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 to over 25 billion dollars by 2025.

Organic cosmetics and personal care

Americans tend to feel the same way about organic cosmetics and personal care items as they do about organic foods. The organic cosmetics market is expected to reach over 1.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2025 and organic face cream was expected to quadruple in value from 2012 to 2022. 35 percent of consumers are looking for products that are free from harmful chemicals, but only 20 percent find it important if the products are organic, meaning the organic label might not be the most important aspect for consumers when it comes to cosmetics and personal care.
