In general, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend increasing fruit and vegetable intake. Fruit consumption rates in the United States had been decreasing for several years, but saw almost a 50 pound increase per capita in 2019. The per capita consumption of fresh fruit, however, States fell from about its peak of 117 pounds in 2019 to about 111 pounds in 2020. Apples, strawberries, and grapes were also widely consumed by U.S. consumers. On average, Americans ate 27.2 pounds of fresh bananas per capita in 2020, significantly more than any other fruit.
