Tea is the second most widely consumed beverage worldwide, after water. Tea can be categorized using several different criteria, with the most common classification being the level of oxidation. Differing degrees of oxidation can produce green, yellow, oolong and black tea among others. For over a decade, China has been the largest producer of tea in the world. In 2020, China produced over 2.7 million metric tons of tea. Other major tea producing countries include India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka. Unsurprisingly, the revenue of China’s tea market surpasses all others – in 2020, Chinese revenue figures amounted to over 78 billion U.S. dollars. Brazil ranked in second place, with a revenue of around 16 billion U.S. dollars.

Production and trade

Although Canada is not a major tea producing country, it boasts a fairly large tea market. It ranked twentieth in terms of revenue in 2020, with the Canadian tea market being valued at around 1.12 billion U.S. dollars. Manufacturer sales of coffee and tea in 2021 totaled around 2.5 billion Canadian dollars. Since Canada is not a major producer of tea, imports of the product outweigh exports. In 2020, imports of tea amounted to approximately 40.77 thousand metric tons, while exports of tea that year were only about three thousand metric tons.

Price and consumption

Consumers have to pay an average of 4.36 Canadian dollars for 72 tea bags. There is no shortage of tea in Canada for consumers willing to pay that price, though. As of 2020, almost 78 liters of tea available for consumption per person. However, not all Canadians are drinking the same amount of tea. About 37 percent of tea consumers are in the high-income category and only about 30 percent of tea drinks categorized as low-income. The majority of consumers are also 35 to 44 years old, but all age groups under consideration have consumers that enjoy the beverage.
