For seniors, staying informed about current events, sending e-mails, and consulting their online banking were the main tasks carried out in 2018. However, with the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and the first resulting lockdown announced on March 16, 2020, theirinternet consumption frequency had increased not only for keeping up with the news, but also for online tutorials and watching movies. Some even increased their online shopping, especially for food orders. Increased usage of communication apps such as Whatsapp was also recorded. However, this does not mean that the elderly did not use social media platforms before the restrictions: about 35 percent of those aged 60 to 69 were active on social networks. Furthermore, 15 percent had used a dating app with the hope of finding a serious relationship.

Even though internet adoption is growing at a steady rate, and some solutions, such as online administration services or dating platforms, are appreciated, others cause concerns. The most common reason for not using the internet was lack of interest, even though 80 percent of those aged 70 years and older found online navigation to be easy. Digital inexperience left users feeling out of touch with those around them, but never to the extent of feeling socially excluded. In 2018, people aged 60 years and older revealed their wish to get professional support or training in the use of technology. Of those who had taken part in trainings, 94 percent were satisfied with the services. Most of the time however, they still received help, often from their children or grandchildren.
