A growing number of Argentinians have been using mobile devices to access the web. The country is home to more than 31 million mobile internet users who seek information and entertainment in the palm of their hands. For instance, approximately two out of five people who participated in a recent survey in Argentina have said that they spend over one hour per day on mobile gaming. When it comes to news consumption, Argentinians are also more likely to turn to their mobile phones: four out of five stated that they used this type of device to inform themselves about the world. Even more so, this intense and widespread use of the web makes Argentina also a relevant online market in terms of social media and e-commerce in Latin America.

Connected and consuming

Argentinians connect online to each other through multiple social networking platforms. Facebook alone has around 33 million users in the South American country. Yet it is not as popular as WhatsApp – acquired by Facebook, Inc. in 2014 – or its top three competitor, Google’s YouTube. Social media plays a crucial role in online economies since they are able to advertise products and services with increasing precision. This is critical in a country that accounts for 8.5 percent of the e-commerce market in Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, nearly 55 percent of its population consist of digital consumers, and this share is far from stagnating, which indicates that Argentinians will remain connected and consuming also in the long run.
