Unconditional love for mobile connectivity

Although mobile internet speed in Peru still lags behind that of fixed-internet broadband, a lower performance seems hardly enough of an argument to discourage its use. On the contrary, its growing popularity has practically turned the term "internet" into a synonym for mobile connectivity, with smartphones being by far the main location for online access in the Andean country. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile phones played an even greater role in ensuring access to this service across different age groups and socioeconomic situations. Whether on the streets, in the workplace, or at home, by the end of 2020, more than nine out of ten Peruvian adult internet users navigated via mobile.

Social networks: home for all activities

Regardless of the device, the main activities carried out online in Peru in 2020 were those related to communication and information search. While these activities already topped the list before the coronavirus outbreak, the two became even more relevant once lockdowns and social distancing measures were implemented across the territory. For these and other purposes, social networks have proven to be the go-to place for Peruvian users. In fact, according to a survey, of the most visited websites during the health crisis, social media platforms made up the first four. Besides their well-known use as a means of communication, information, and entertainment, social networks and messaging apps have also recently become powerful online shopping and ordering channels. With adoption still rising and new platforms entering the market, there seems to be no boundaries to the reach of these tools.
