The leading video gaming companies from Denmark developed games in particular for handheld devices, tablets, and mobile phones. Tactile Games was by far the largest company in the country, generating a revenue of over 430 million Danish kroner in 2019. Second came Trophy Games, which creates football manager games, also especially for mobile devices. Biodome Games, the third largest game company in Denmark, developed mobile gaming apps such as Gold Digger and Gold Train.
In general, playing digital games on smartphones is quite popular in Denmark. Roughly a quarter of the population played games on their mobile phones in the fourth quarter of 2019. By comparison, tablets were less used for this purpose, at six percent of respondents. Based on revenue, the leading Android and iPhone gaming apps downloaded by Danes were Coin Master, Pokémon Go, and Candy Crush Saga. A ranking of the most valuable iPad gaming app titles showed a different picture. Here, the game creation system Roblox and the battle royal gaming app Fortnite ranked highest.
Within the recently growing eSports phenomenon, the most famous games in Denmark include Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), as well as Fortnite. With “N0tail”, the gamer tag of Johan Sundstein, Denmark is the home of the highest earning professional eSports player worldwide of all time. As of March 2020, he has earned nearly seven million U.S. dollars with the multiplayer online battle arena game Dota 2 (Defense of the Ancients 2). On the other hand, revenue generated through eSports bettings was the highest on CS:GO gaming tournaments, amounting to 100 million Danish kroner in 2018. In total, the eSports betting turnover at the national lottery Danske Spil was 148 million kroner that year.
