Dog food, the most produced and consumed pet food in Mexico

World renown for their miniature dog breed, the Chihuahua, dogs are evidently Mexican’s most popular pets. This can be seen by the volume of dog food sales registered every year. The adoration for these fluffy companions generates nearly 16 billion Mexican pesos worth of dog food annually. The Mexican dog food manufacturing industry also thrives by selling both in the domestic market and abroad. It was estimated that the most consumed type of dog food in 2020 would be dry food, with a sales revenue of more than 1.8 billion U.S. dollars. When it comes to output, dogs also account for the largest pet food segment, with a dog food production volume doubling in size in the past decade.

Wet cat food on the rise

The sales volume generated by cat food was estimated to reach approximately 138 thousand metric tons in 2020. This represents less than 15 percent of total dog food sales. Just as with dogs, Mexican cat owners prefer to feed their kittens with dry food. However, as wet food is a good way to help cats stay hydrated, the wet cat food segment is becoming more popular, with sales expected to grow 25 percent from 2020 to 2022.
