Within the United States, there are 27 contract manufacturers of hair coloring products, the majority of which are based in New Jersey. Hair coloring makes up roughly thirteen percent of the American hair care industry. Within the industry, women's hair coloring products make up the vast majority of coloring sales, which reached over a billion U.S. dollars in 2019 alone.
For women's hair coloring, L'Oreal Paris leads, with a market share of almost 38 percent. L'Oreal's Superior Preference was the best selling hair color brand in 2019. However, Clairol sales spiked most of any brand, by over 260 percent from 2018 to 2019.
Most Americans get their hair colored four to five times in a year, typically with permanent color. People go to the salon at about the same rate, perhaps due to the soothing draw of the professional hair care experience. As of 2019, over 64 million people used hair coloring products on their hair. Reasons for doing so can vary, including to cover grey hair, to accessorize with a fresh shade of color, or for the sense of well-being coming from self-care.
