The number of people swimming on a monthly basis in England has steadily decreased, from roughly 5.6 million in 2007 to approximately 4.2 million in 2016. In contrast, the share of swimming participants who are members of a club in England has increased from 2.3 percent in 2013 to 3.9 percent in 2016. Also, the monthly share of children participating in swimming, diving or lifesaving activities in England has steadily increased, from 45.3 percent of 5 to 10-year-olds in 2012 to 53.5 percent in 2016.
When it comes to regional outdoor swimming participation in the United Kingdom (UK), the highest share of participants among the population can be seen in the South West, East, South East and Northern Ireland, all ranging between 13 and 14 percent. Swimming participation in Scotland has held rather steady, ranging between 19 and 17 percent since 2007.

The share of swimming participants who took part in a competition in England has been increasing from 1.4 percent of participants to 2.6 percent, and a total of roughly 21,74 million British pounds of public funding for Olympic swimming in the UK was provided towards the Tokyo Games in 2020. In 2014, a total of approximately 74,241 men's and boys' swimwear items were sold, with a manufacturer sales value of roughly 245 thousand British pounds.
