Fitness industry in the United Kingdom (UK) - statistics & facts

UK fitness hotspot

There are over 7.2 thousand health and fitness clubs in the United Kingdom, with over 10 million combined members. Only Germany has more health and fitness club members in Europe, making the UK one of the fitness hotspots across the continent. Of those health and fitness clubs in the United Kingdom, close to half are solely fitness facilities, generating a total annual turnover of approximately two billion British pounds. The largest proportion of these gyms generate a turnover between 100 and 250 thousand British pounds. Meanwhile, just a small handful of these fitness facilities report turnover reaching into the millions of British pounds.

Employment in the fitness industry

There are roughly 191 thousand people in the United Kingdom with an occupation in the sports and fitness sector, of which around 69 thousand are fitness instructors. There are also an estimated 107 thousand people who are employed in the sports and fitness industry as sports coaches, instructors, and officials. Furthermore, the number of personal trainers in the UK has experienced steady growth since 2011, with the personal training industry market size forecast to be worth over 626 million British pounds in 2021.

The UK works up a sweat

Over the last few years, the number of people participating in fitness classes in England has remained consistently over six million. Latest estimates also suggested that millions more were taking part in generic fitness training outside of a class environment. In Scotland, meanwhile, an estimated 71 percent of men and 61 percent of women were meeting the guidelines for moderate or vigorous physical activity. On the other end of the spectrum, some 18 percent of men and 23 percent of women from Scotland reported very low levels of physical activity. In the UK as a whole, some fitness enthusiasts have turned to apps and online services to keep them in shape. Some of the most popular fitness and health services used by paying customers in the UK included Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, and 30 Day Fitness Challenge. Meanwhile, some four percent of respondents in a 2020 survey in the United Kingdom reported to have used health tracking apps or fitness, yoga and training apps.
