Consumer electronics in Hungary - statistics & facts

Consumer electronics refer to devices designed for personal use; they primarily serve the purposes of communication, entertainment, and recreation. The Hungarian consumer electronics market revenue totaled 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, thus marking an increase compared to 2019. However, according to Statista Consumer Market Outlook, revenue figures are estimated to decline over the coming years.

In 2020, computing was the leading segment of the consumer electronics market in Hungary, accounting for the highest share of revenue; totaling 719 million U.S. dollars. During the same year, the number of notebooks sold in the country increased, while desktop computer sales continued to decline. Although the most popular notebook vendor among the Hungarian users was Lenovo, it was Apple that dominated the tablet computer market; it held a 37 percent market share. Still, according to the findings of a 2021 survey, most Hungarians would not spend more than 200 thousand forints on a new computing device.

In 2019, flat-screen TVs were the most common digital devices since they were present in over 80 percent of Hungarian households. Moreover, every second household owned multiple TV sets in 2020. This is not surprising considering the amount of daily time spent watching television in the country. Smartphone penetration is similarly high in Hungary — in 2020, there were nearly seven million smartphone users. As of 2021, the mobile phone market has been dominated by Samsung, with a market share of 34 percent. It was followed by Huawei and Apple, respectively.

The smart device market is on the rise in Hungary, with smart TVs and wearable technology gadgets attracting the most interest. Even though smart appliance penetration rate is still relatively low in the country, it is estimated to increase to 7.3 percent by 2025. The findings of a survey conducted among Hungarians in 2021 revealed that the most important criteria when buying smart devices were compatibility with other devices, long battery life, and the purchase price.
