Consumer electronics in the Asia-Pacific region - statistics & facts

The consumer electronics market was one of the markets to have contracted the least due to the global coronavirus pandemic. This was despite consumers staying at home and the massive migration to work-from-home (WFH) in 2020 and most of 2021. Although the consumer electronics market size in the Asia-Pacific region somewhat declined due to the pandemic, it is predicted to catch up by 2022 and continue to grow. The Asia-Pacific region consists of many emerging economies that have lower consumer electronics ownership rates and along with increasing consumer spending, this creates plenty of room for growth.

Emerging markets of the Asia-Pacific region

The growth of the consumer electronics market in the Asia-Pacific region can be attributed to two subregions specifically: Southeast Asia and Southern Asia. Eastern Asian countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea pioneered the production of consumer electronics in the Asia-Pacific region and now have some of the best-selling electronics brands in the world, such as Sony and Samsung. Hand in hand with the popularity of domestic brands, the ownership rate of consumer electronics is high in Eastern Asia. While some Southeast Asian countries also have significant consumer electronics industries in the country, namely Vietnam being the second-largest smartphone exporter in the world, the consumption of electronics is not as high as mature markets, in terms of both usage and price. However, the consumer electronics revenue per capita was forecast to grow in many highly populated Southern Asian countries like India and Bangladesh, while the consumption volume was forecast to increase in Southeast Asian countries, resulting in the consumer electronics market expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.

Consumer preferences

TVs, computers, and mobile phones are staples for an average consumer. All these markets are quite saturated as almost every household owns a TV, every person owns a mobile phone, and every other person has one kind of computing device. A decade ago, mobile devices transformed the consumer electronics market. As a result, the market share of laptops exceeded desktop PCs, and now smartphones account for the largest share in consumer electronics by a remarkable margin. Today, smart devices such as smart wearables and smart streaming devices are predicted to increase rapidly in the coming years. Whether it be by satisfying new consumer demands or replacing previous technologies.
