Consumer electronics in the United States - Statistics & Facts

Consumer electronics are home electronic equipment intended for everyday use, including devices for entertainment, communication, and recreation. The global consumer spending on technology hit 1.6 trillion U.S. dollars in 2018 and was forecast to reach 2.06 trillion U.S. dollars by 2023. The retail revenue from consumer electronics sales in the United States was expected to reach close to 407 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, estimated as of July 2020. That was a significant decrease compared to the forecast carried out before the coronavirus outbreak when the revenue was expected to amount to 422 billion U.S. dollars.

The U.S. consumer electronics industry can be broken down into several segments, including televisions, personal computers, mobile phones, tablets, wearables, cameras, speakers, and headphones. Most of these markets have experienced sales fluctuations over the past years. The largest amount of smartphone shipments was observed in 2017 and the number was forecast to decrease annually by 2023. In a similar vein, the tablet shipments were expected to peak in 2019 and then decrease. The wireless speakers’ sales climaxed in 2018 but have decreased since. While non-smart speakers’ sales plateaued, smart speakers’ sales grew by 2019 and slightly decreased in 2020, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

With the advancement of technology, more and more connected devices have started to appear on both the global and the U.S. market. With the increasing popularity of devices such as connected TVs, smart speakers, and smart bulbs, the United States becomes a hotspot for smart homes and is forecast to be the country with the highest smart home penetration rate. The most common smart home devices among Americans were smart speakers, like the Amazon Echo, and streaming devices, like the Amazon Fire TV stick and the Google Chromecast. A total of 39 million smart speakers were estimated to be shipped in the United States in 2020.
