Virtual Assistant Technology in the U.S. - Statistics & Facts

In times of limitless technological innovations, emerging tech such as the Internet of Things (IoT) has taken many forms and shapes. The IoT is made up of devices connected together with automated systems and is increasingly associated with objects that can “talk to each other”. A virtual assistant, or an intelligent personal assistant (IPA) is a software agent that performs tasks or services for a consumer based on their commands. Run on various devices, from smart speakers to smartphones and wearables, virtual assistants are one of the main use cases of voice technology, whose market size is expected to hit 27 billion U.S. dollars globally by 2025. Virtual assistants have already been widely used given the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of smart speakers: there were nearly 112 million voice assistant users in the United States in 2019.

While Amazon has been the ultimate leader among vendors of smart speakers with intelligent personal assistants, the company experienced a significant decrease in their market share during the past years. As the most recent data shows, Amazon still held the largest market share, followed by Google and Baidu. The success of Amazon’s line of smart speaker products, has led to an increasing number of smart home devices that are compatible with Alexaand the number hit 100 thousand as of July 2020.

Although Google Assistant was behind Alexa in terms of number of supported smart home devices, it topped the ranking of most accurate digital assistants, answering nearly 93 percent of the questions posed to it correctly. Navigation and information queries were the types of questions which Google Assistant responded the most accurately to. Commerce questions seemed to be the most intricate ones for digital assistants. Despite the potential space for improvement, digital assistants have become a key part of modern society and data suggests that the trend will continue. Nearly 123 million voice assistant users are expected in the United States by 2021 and the corresponding figure for the global market was expected to be close to 2.7 billion devices.
