Smart home refers to a home setup in which appliances and devices are controlled through internet connection. From smart doorbells to thermostats and light bulbs, smart home has grown popular all over the world. It was estimated that almost 37 percent of households in the United States owned a smart home device in 2020, the highest forecast smart home penetration rate worldwide. As a consequence of the growing popularity of smart home devices in the United States, smart home revenues have also been on the rise with smart home sales in the United States projected to reach almost 47 billion U.S. dollars by 2025, which would be approximately twice the amount of revenue in 2020.

Devices

As of 2021, the most commonly owned smart home devices among U.S. Americans were smart TVs, smart speakers, and digital streaming devices. The number of smart speakers in U.S. households for example is set to almost double from 2018 to 2021 when the installed base of smart speakers is forecast to reach 90.7 million units. Among other connected devices in use were energy managing devices, security and safety devices, as well as smart appliances, such as smart washing machines.

Outlook - smart home security

The smart home penetration rate in the United States is expected to increase further across all segments in the following years, with control and connectivity technologies as the leading segment. For 2025 the projection shos that more than half of U.S. Americans will make use of these technologies at that point.
Security is set to become more and more of an issues both for smart home product and service providers and consumer alike. Door cameras and door locks are named as two of the top products consumers are likely to purchase in the next 12 to 18 months, and 80 percent of survey respondents said that one of the main benefits of smart home technologies is that it makes their home safe. But not all smart home devices are perceived as being equally secure. Smart speakers and other voice assistants are named as the least secure items in a survey amongst North American adults.
