Telecommunications market in Belgium- Statistics & Facts

The telecommunications market is a constant evolving industry with mobile and broadband technologies as the most prospective elements within the market. In Belgium, this industry was dominated by fixed revenue, but skewed towards the mobile segment. The market is competitive, but limited, with Proximus, Telenet and Orange as the main players.

The share of households with broadband internet grew from 41 percent in 2005 to approximately 85 percent in 2017. Furthermore, as confirmed by a survey on the internet connections individuals in Flanders use to connect their smartphone, roughly 95 percent of Flemish smartphone owners connected their smartphone with a Wi-Fi network at home, whereas 70.5 percent indicated to use mobile internet.

In 2017, smartphone ownership in Belgium amounted to 90 percent within the age group 18 to 34 years old, whereas among 65 to 75-year-olds roughly 55 percent owned a smartphone. When narrowing it down to a survey conducted on the usage of smartphones, more than 90 percent of respondents indicated to have used it the day before, whereas three percent mentioned the previous week as the last time they used their smartphone. In terms of smartphone brands used, Apple was the most popular with 18 to 24-year-olds (35 percent), while the share of Samsung smartphone usage was larger within the 25 years and older age group.

Regarding mobile providers, Proximus had the largest market share with approximately 41 percent, whereas Orange and Base had 24.4 and 16.9 percent respectively. However, according to a survey done on the provision of internet used by Flemish households, Telenet had with a little more than 60 percent the largest share, while 24.3 percent of Flemish individuals indicated to use Proximus as their internet provider.

With the rise of mobile phones and wireless service provisions, quad play packages (also known as ''The Fantastic Four'') became more popular year by year. Quad play packages combine triple play service of broadband internet access, television and telephone with wireless service provisions. Between 2009 and 2017, the number of households with a quad play package went from 13.500 to approximately 940,000. However, figures on distribution of broadband bundled services in Belgium, show that triple play packages remained on top with a share with 53 percent, followed by quad play and double play with 29 and 18 percent respectively.
