Xiaomi - statistics & facts

Since its founding in 2010, Xiaomi has rapidly risen to the top of the ultra-crowded Chinese technology market and now counts itself among the top smartphone manufacturers globally. The company primarily specializes in smartphones and consumer electronics, and its products, especially smartphones, own a large share of global markets. The company has snowballed, launching itself into direct competition with Apple, Samsung, and other tech industry giants. Despite this, Xiaomi has experienced steadily growing revenues, operating income, and profits.

Xiaomi smartphones

Integral to the company’s operations is its smartphone business. As of 2020, Xiaomi smartphones account for around 11.4 percent of the global smartphone market, trailing only Apple, Samsung, and Huawei in terms of market share. In its home market, Xiaomi has the fourth-highest market share behind three other local brands, Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo . We will see much more changes in this market since Honor brand previously owned by Huawei split in 2020 and is now completely owned by Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd. Xiaomi has, however, seen great success in the Indian market, having overtaken Samsung to become the market leader in the Indian smartphone market with a market share of 24 percent. The Xiaomi Redmi 9a series, including the Redmi Note 10 and Redmi 9 Power, are some of the top-selling smartphone models in India as of April 2021.

Xiaomi wearables

Another key segment of Xiaomi’s business is its wearables. Since first entering the market in July 2014 with its Mi Band, the company has overtaken the long-established market leader, Fitbit, and challenged the Apple Watch for the most popular new product in the market. In 2020, the company shipped 50.7 million wearable devices, second only to Apple, whose massive 151.4 million unit shipments guaranteed comfortably its market leader position. Xiaomi is also entering the segments of virtual reality and augmented reality with announcements of new prototypes in the year 2021.

Xiaomi smart home

Driven by the success of its smartphone and wearables products, Xiaomi has recently entered the smart home and connected device market. Xiaomi Mi Home app manages all of their smart home products and hardware offerings, including everything from smart vacuums to smart rice cookers. In combination with its manufacture of smart home devices, the company has also heavily invested in the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve existing products and eventually integrate compatible technology offerings into more aspects of consumers’ everyday lives. The company’s AI assistant has over 102 million monthly active users. With its entry into the European market with smartphones and smart home appliances, we can expect Xiaomi to capture more of the market shares in the coming years globally.
