Disney+ subscriber numbers worldwide 2020-2022

The number of Disney+ subscribers reached a new high of 152.1 million in the third quarter of 2022. Walt Disney's combined direct-to-consumer subscriber count, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, amounted to around 221.1 million, surpassing its competitor Netflix in terms for subscriptions.

Disney Plus keeps adding subscribers

The Walt Disney Company launched its highly anticipated streaming service in November 2019. Less than two years later, Disney+ reached a significant milestone by amassing 100 million subscribers worldwide – which is even more impressive considering that the company had initially set a goal of 60 to 90 million users by 2024. By comparison, it took SVOD market leader Netflix roughly a decade to reach the 100-million-mark despite having navigated a much less competitive market then. And while Disney+ has grown its user base consistently, Netflix reported subscriber losses in its first two quarters of 2022.

What makes Disney+ so appealing to audiences is not just its repertoire of animated classics but also the vast range of content from Disney’s various subsidiaries. The House of Mouse has acquired Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, Pixar, and Marvel Entertainment over the last few years, setting it up for success with viewers of all ages. In 2021, for example, “The Mandalorian” and “WandaVision,” available exclusively on Disney+, were among the five most popular original streaming series in the United States and the United Kingdom alike.
