Levi Strauss & Co. - Statistics and Facts

Levi Strauss & Co. is one of the best-known apparel companies in the world, particularly for their jeans. The company's founder, Levi Strauss, and his business partner, Jacob Davis, are credited with inventing blue jeans in 1873, after taking out a patent for denim pants reinforced with rivets. Initially used for workwear, jeans are now a staple of many people’s wardrobes, worn as workwear, fashion, and casual clothing by people throughout society and around the world. The value of the jeans market is forecast to keep on growing; it is predicted to reach 87 billion dollars by 2027.

Revenue

Today, Levi’s offers practically every style of jeans a consumer can imagine, from skinny to flares to bootcut. Their original line is called Levi’s® 501® Original. They also have other brands, which expand into other markets, such as Docker’s, which specializes in khaki apparel, and Beyond Yoga, an activewear and athleisure brand. The Levi’s brand still accounts for the vast majority of Levi Strauss & Co.’s revenues. Like the entire apparel industry, Levi Strauss’s sales took a hit in 2020, during coronavirus lockdowns and the resulting store closures, and the company made a loss of roughly 130 million. Nevertheless, in 2021, sales recovered and Levi Strauss's profit easily surpassed pre-pandemic levels. The majority of the company’s sales comes from men’s products, although this share has been falling.

Sustainability

The company is also adjusting to demand for increased sustainability. Levi’s has launched a so called ‘tailor shop’, which is meant to offer consumers the chance to extend the lifecycle of their products. There is also the opportunity to recycle jeans in store. The company has set targets for its greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy use. In 2020, 76 percent of the energy used in Levi Strauss facilities was renewable. The company aims to use 100 percent renewable energy at its facilities by 2026.

Competitors

When it comes to specialist jeans retailers, Levi Strauss & Co’s main competitors include the two brands Wrangler and Lee, both owned by Kontoor Brands. Founded in 1947, Wrangler has not been around for as long as Levi Strauss & Co. Kontoor has been experiencing falling revenues since before coronavirus, sinking from three billion dollars to 2 billion dollars over the five years leading to 2020.
