Victoria's Secret - Statistics & Facts

Victoria’s Secret was established in 1977 by American businessman Roy Raymond, who felt that traditional department stores were not friendly enough towards men shopping for women’s lingerie, and decided to start his own women’s lingerie business. The store grew rapidly and has become one of the largest and most valuable apparel brands in the world. The global women's night and underwear market was valued at about 67 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, and Victoria’s Secret, one of the leading players in lingerie and intimate wear, generated 5.4 billion U.S. dollars that year. However, these most recently reported revenue figures of Victoria's Secret was a blow to the company, representing a drop of more than two billion U.S. dollars on the previous year. This was down to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which also led to closures of more than 200 Victoria's Secret stores in North America in the same year. Consequently, the sales average of each Victoria's Secret store went down dramatically.

Brand popularity

Victoria’s Secret has a strong brand presence in the fashion space. In the United Kingdom (UK), the brand name attracted an average of 550,000 monthly online searches. That said, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which is held to promote and showcase its products, has seen its viewership decline steadily since 2014. In November 2019, Victoria's Secret announced that it would no longer hold its annual fashion show.

Victoria's Secret fragrances

In addition to being a womenswear retailer, Victoria’s Secret also carries a popular line of fragrances, makeup, and skincare. Although the brand is better known for lingerie, a 2020 survey found that close to 20 million Americans used Victoria’s Secret perfume, cologne, and toilet water.
