Hawaii is the U.S. state with the highest household electricity. In February 2022, the average retail price of electricity for Hawaiian residences amounted to roughly 40 cents per kilowatt hour. California followed in second, with 26.7 cents per kilowatt hour. Meanwhile, Idaho and North Dakota registered the lowest prices in the period, at around 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
Electricity prices worldwide
The U.S. retail price for electricity increased in almost every year since 1990. In 2020, it stood at 10.66 U.S. cents per kilowatt hour, almost double the charge put on electricity back in 1990. Nevertheless, the U.S. still has some of the lowest household electricity prices worldwide, particularly when compared to European countries reliant on energy imports or with renewables surcharges.
Electricity uses and consumption
Electricity is a vital facet of everyday life and has significantly eased and improved the quality of life worldwide. Human rights groups in the U.S. such as the NAACP have argued for electricity to be included in a list of basic human rights next to access to drinking water and sanitation. Electricity has many uses, which include being used for lighting, heating and cooling systems, computers, television, and laundry machines. The residential sector is the largest electricity consumer in the U.S.
