Telecommunications industry in Argentina – statistics & facts

Argentina is among the largest telecommunications markets in Latin America. This South American country has the third-biggest telco industry spending in the region –only behind Brazil and Mexico– despite placing fourth in terms of population. Between 2015 and 2020, the revenue of the Argentine telecommunications sector increased by over 250 percent in nominal terms, surpassing 440 billion Argentine pesos in the latter year. This growth, however, did not necessarily keep up with the nation’s inflation rate, which remains among the highest worldwide. Still, domestic and global companies fight for consumers preference within this market.

The triad of the Argentine mobile segment

Mexico City-based América Móvil, which controls brands like Claro, is the leading mobile phone operator. The Spanish group Telefónica, owner of the Movistar brand, and Telecom Argentina, also known for its mobile phone service Personal, play a major role in this field as well. América Móvil’s revenue in the Southern Cone –as the company collectively refers to Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay– amounted to over 56 billion Mexican pesos in 2020, making it its fourth-largest market in Latin America and the Caribbean. Meanwhile, Telecom Argentina’s revenue decreased by 14 percent between 2018 and 2020. This decline demonstrates that the telco sector still faces fundamental challenges, namely an increasing demand for infrastructure and persistent economic instability.

More connected devices, more data consumption

A 2020 study illustrates how mobile users in Argentina use more than just smartphones and computers to access the internet. For instance, around four out of five respondents had at least one smart TV at home, whereas over a third had one or more video game consoles connected to the web. These figures indicate that Argentine households are part of a larger tendency to consume smart devices. Still only rising, Internet of Things (IoT) connections in Latin America altogether were forecast to increase by over 50 percent between 2021 and 2025. Time will tell whether Argentinians will have the interest and means to follow the regional trend.
