Internet usage in Thailand - statistics & facts

Since Thailand has become digitally connected over the past years, the number of internet users in Thailand was forecast to gradually increase. In 2021, Thailand ranked eighth in the number of internet users in Asia Pacific, out of twenty-four countries with China ranking first. When considering geographical measures, the central region in Thailand had the highest number of households with internet access, which was followed by the northeastern region.

How do Thai household access the internet?

The Thai government has been pushing forward Thailand’s national policy on transforming the country to become digitalized by gradually developing innovative technology and expanding network infrastructure. Nowadays, high-speed internet connections in Thailand are accessible to most households, whether it is fiber optic, XDSL, or cable broadband. On accessing the internet, the most popular devices to surf the internet for Thais were mobile devices in recent years.

The penetration of mobile internet in Thailand

In addition to laptops and desktops, Thais also widely use mobile phones to access the internet. This contributes to almost half of the share of internet traffic in Thailand. The penetration rate of mobile phone internet users was forecast to increase yearly. Thus, smartphone ownership has increased in Thailand over the past several years as well. To facilitate mobile internet in Thailand, three major mobile operators namely, AIS, True Move, and Dtac provide mobile internet users with high-speed mobile internet via 4G and 5G networks.

The popularity of social media among Thai internet users

Thais use internet in Thailand for several purposes such as for professional operations and personal use, especially for social networks. The penetration rate of social network users in Thailand has been continuously rising throughout the years, with more than half of the total population in Thailand being social media users. Furthermore, the average time spent on using the internet in Thailand was nine hours per day, with around two and a half hours spent using social media in recent years. That being said, the leading social media networks in Thailand are Facebook, Youtube, Line, Instagram, and Twitter.
