Telecommunications industry in Hungary - statistics & facts

Telecommunication is increasingly becoming characterized by digital convergence, formerly unrelated technology is combined, and the lines between voice, data, and video are becoming increasingly blurred. Therefore, telecommunications service providers need to keep pace with continuous technological advancements and consumer demand. In Hungary, the telecommunications industry generated revenue worth 4.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 and this figure is expected to follow an increasing trend in the future.

Telecommunication companies

The mobile network market has been dominated by Magyar Telekom, the country’s most successful telecommunications company, which is also one of the first to launch commercial 5G services. Yettel, formerly known as Telenor Hungary, is considered the second largest mobile phone operator and recorded a revenue worth 545 million euros in 2021. As of January 2022, DIGI’s Hungarian branch changed ownership as it was acquired by 4iG. This transaction and further acquisitions in the info-communication sector made over the past years indicate that 4iG is on its way to becoming a significant telecommunications group in the region.

Fixed-line and mobile telephony

In recent years, both the mobile and the fixed-line telephony market have been characterized by Magyar Telekom’s overwhelming share. The popularity of landline telephony in Hungary has been following a decreasing trend which is also reflected in the lessening number of landline voice channels per 100 inhabitants. Moreover, the number of calls initiated from fixed lines in Hungary decreased by 44 percent between the first quarter of 2016 and the second quarter of 2021. As for mobile telephony, in the second quarter of 2021, over 11 million active SIM cards were registered in the country, which is more than Hungary’s population. At the same time, Hungarians seemingly preferred postpaid cards, their number reaching almost 10 million over the past years.

Broadband and mobile internet

As internet usage is becoming an inevitable part of everyday life, it is no surprise that in 2021, 91 percent of Hungarian households had broadband internet access, which is a significant increase compared to 51 percent in 2010.
